Food waste is a big problem all around the world. Every day, millions of tonnes of food are thrown away around the world. In 2019, 931 million tonnes of food waste were produced globally. Is it a problem?
Food waste is rarely recycled, and the vast majority of it ends up in landfills, where it decomposes into methane gas. Food waste produces methane. Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas that is several times more powerful than CO2 and other greenhouse gases. Methane causes the creation of several hazardous gases, including CO2 and chlorofluorocarbon, which absorb infrared radiation and heat up the earth’s atmosphere, making food waste the third leading cause of global warming. To prevent the negative side effects of food waste, some smart waste solutions should be followed such as food waste collection solutions for proper food waste management including food waste tracking.
Trash is classified and dealt with differently in several countries. As a result, food waste is chopped into tiny pieces in factories and either converted into plant food or buried in landfills to produce methane gas, which is used as a fuel source. Organic waste, on the other hand, is frequently flushed down the drain in many other countries. This might easily harm the drainage system, which isn’t built to handle large chunks of solid food waste.
Every item we throw contains a significant amount of hidden energy and other resources. To prevent damages rising from food waste, some smart solutions are developed. Food waste collection software enables kitchens and restaurants to track, monitor, and calculate the impact of food waste. Those solutions also raise employee’s awareness of waste issues. In addition, an employee uses scales to weigh and classify anything thrown from a dropped piece of produce to food left on customers’ plates, and the software performs greater analysis to identify patterns.
Technology allowed us to produce more food than we use, and food waste has been a problem since then. Like many other environmental challenges, food waste will not be fixed unless every one of us plays a role.
Smart waste management software presents excellent data collection from garbage trucks while enabling vehicle tracking, route optimization, and so many alternatives.
