As technology develops, cities are getting their ‘smart’ title. The smart conceptualization is referring to an autonomous decision-making mechanism in the light of certain principles. In that context, smart cities develop smart waste management solutions by using high-tech mechanisms to deal with the mass that human-kind has created since technology is too vital for cities to ignore. Smart containers are one of the most efficient solutions for smart cities since waste needs to be smarten up!

Before, the introduction of smart bins, waste collection from the old garbage bins was carried out many times a day. However, together with the smart containers, it is carried out only once every two weeks. As a result, this human power need in the waste collection mechanism is significantly reduced. Luckily, that is not the only outcome. Air pollution coming from the garbage trucks is also reduced as well as fuel consumption and traffic congestion. 

Smart bins have that wireless ultrasonic fill-level sensor embedded inside them.

Through using the Internet of Things (IoT), smart bins and the capabilities of the ultrasonic sensor are gaining huge popularity around the world. With using IoT, the data about the fullness of the bin is transmitted to a cloud-based monitoring and analytics platform. Data can be used for container tracking, maximizing energy, cutting costs, reducing the carbon footprint, improving collection routes, improving driver working conditions, and monitoring the effect of sustainability initiatives. Therefore, waste collection services can optimize their routes and frequency based on this data.

Smart containers can track and detect the following: 

  • Waste overflowing
  • The exact time of recycling the waste
  • The exact time of collection of this waste
  • Waste that is not disposed of in the trash cans
  • Collection & distribution routes
  • Clear communication with the driver in charge

Turning waste into a resource can be accomplished if people are involved and dedicated to sorting waste, favoring recycling processes as much as possible, and attempting to reduce household waste. The World Bank has contributed over $4.7 billion to more than 340 solid waste management programs in a variety of countries around the world. As citizens, we can make them contribute more!
